Overview

 

Xtune is a guitar tuner app for the on-the-go musician. If a user is playing somewhere and realizes (s)he didn't bring a tuner pedal, they can just use Xtune on a mobile device.

 

There are 2 modes; Auto and Manual. Auto mode picks up the chords from the instrument and guides users to perfect tuning. Manual mode plays the chord through a mobile device to tune by ear.

 

• Roles: Interaction design, visual design and user research
• Screener and protocol development: A test screener and protocol were developed to find participants for a qualitative interview. I was looking for participants that were 18 and older that played guitar. If they make it past the screener, then they would go through various scenarios in the protocol.

It was important for the app to be simple and concise for all levels of guitarists. A beginner may not initially use the different "Tuning" options, so the "Auto" mode needs to quickly show the chords to the user.

Visuals

 

The goal was a very clear and concise interface so users can easily see how to tune each string on their guitar. It also utilizes a visual readout that guitarists have probably seen before on physical pedal tuners.
